REFINERY OCTANE BOOSTERS

AFD-7062 comprises 62% by weight of methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (MMT®), the well-known manganese based gasoline octane booster, dissolved in a hydrocarbon solvent. AFD – 7062 is registered with the US EPA. It is intended for refinery blending into gasoline at treatment rates ranging up to about 100 pounds per thousand barrels (PTB) of gasoline. For blending into unleaded gasoline that is used, or may be used, in cars equipped with catalytic converters, the recommended maximum treatment rate is 42 PTB. (This maximum treatment rate is equivalent to 18mg of manganese per liter of gasoline, which is the manganese specification limit for unleaded gasoline in many countries, including major users such as Canada and China.)

The phase-out of the use of tetra-ethyl lead as a gasoline octane booster has created the need for a “lead replacement petrol” (LRP) in several countries. This results from the continuing presence of a significant population of older vehicles, which were designed originally for use with leaded gasoline, and have so-called “soft” valve seats. If these vehicles are driven under high speed or load conditions on typical unleaded gasoline, engine failure can occur because of “valve seat recession” (VSR). LRP contains additives designed to prevent such failure. One of the additives approved for use in LRP is MMT. AFD-7062 is effective in helping prevent VSR when used at a treatment rate of at least 42 PTB, and is completely effective in the 85 to 90 PTB range.
